French Revolution graphics collection. ca. 1789-1880.

Caricatures, portraits, and depictions of battles and other political events, focussing mainly on the French Revolution and Napoleonic era, with some caricatures and portraits on subjects from the Restoration and later. Included are hand-colored political caricatures from the French Revolution, hand-colored German and French caricatures of Napoleon, and portraits of Jean Sylvain Bailly, Joseph Antoine Joachim Cérutti, Camille Desmoulins, the Marquis de Lafayette, Maximilien Robespierre, Jean-Paul Rabaut Saint Etienne, Saint-Just, and many other significant and lesser figures from the Revolution. Caricatures are nearly all anonymous. Portraits, scenes from the Revolution and Napoleonic battle scenes are by a variety of artists, including Denis Auguste Marie Raffet, Tony Johannot, Ary Scheffer, and Alfred Johannot; many are anonymous. Publishers are usually unidentified. Named publishers include Ternisien d'Haudricourt and Furne in Paris, T. Kinnersley and Richard Bentley in London, D. Appleton & Co. and Samuel L. Hall in New York, and Gebr. Schumann in Zwickau [Germany].
